Flow Instabilities and Dynamics

In 2018, the research activities within the field of flow instabilities and dynamics were affiliated in an independent laboratory of the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Technical Acoustics.  Directed by Professor Kilian Oberleithner, the lab is located in the building of the Hermann-Föttinger-Institute.

Research foci of the laboratory are the analysis and control of turbulent flows using linear stability theory and empirical model reduction.  Research activities range from fundamental studies of canonical shear flows to industry-relevant problems in the field of gas turbines, wind power, and hydropower technology.

Best Poster Award

Marc participated in the "16th Multiphase Flow Conference & Short Course" taking place in Dresden from 13.-16.11.2018. There, the Best Poster Award (2nd rank) was granted to him for his poster  Analysis of horizontal slug flow with spectral proper orthogonal decompostion (SPOD).

Invited talk in the Colloquium

Our collaborator Ivan Litvinov from Novosibirsk State University will visit our laboratory on November 30, 2018. He will give a talk on “Unsteady swirling flow in the draft tube of a model hydro turbine”. 11 am in the Alte Bibliothek of the HF building.

12th European Fluid Mechanics Conference

Kilian and Jens attended the 12th European Fluid Mechanics Conference which tooks place in Vienna from September 9 to September 13, 2018. Here, Jens gave a talk about a „Receptivity analysis of the precessing vortex core in a turbulent swirling jet by open-loop control and adjoint linear stability theory“.

International Retreat on Vortical Flow and Aerodynamics

Finn participated in the conference 4th International Retreat on Vortical Flow and Aerodynamics (IRVA4)  from October 1-3, 2018 in Novosibirsk. The topic of his presentation was: „Open and closed loop control of the precessing vortex core in a swirl-stabilized combustor“

Best Paper ASME EXPO 2017

We are proud to announce that the paper

Experimental Study of Transient Mechanisms of Bi-Stable Flame Shape Transitions in a Swirl Combustor by

Michael Stoehr, Kilian Oberleithner, Moritz Sieber,  Zhiyao Yin and Wolfgang Meier

presented at the ASME TURBO EXPO 2017 in Charlotte, USA

was chosen as the Best Paper by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Gas Turbine Institute's Combustion, Fuels & Emissions Committee.
